Almar Ahad is a first-generation Afghan American multimedia storyteller with a passion for exploring identity, tradition, and the lived experiences of refugees. Her work seeks to bridge personal narratives with broader cultural and political themes, centering underrepresented voices and global perspectives. She aspires to continue telling stories that foster empathy, spark dialogue, and deepen understanding across cultures and communities.
Almar has worked on producing and coordinating creative projects across media, nonprofit, and tech organizations. Through this work, she has gained a strong foundation in production, communications, and organizational leadership. She has produced events and short-form documentaries, managing projects from early planning through final delivery. Her nonprofit work has included managing communications and donor engagement for major fundraising campaigns, strengthening community relationships and advancing organizational goals. Across these roles, Almar has developed skills in managing multimedia projects and supporting organizational storytelling.
While earning her Master of Science in Journalism with a specialization in Documentary Filmmaking at Columbia University, Almar directed and produced a number of short-form video and photo projects exploring themes such as identity, belonging, and the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers in New York. Through these projects, she developed skills in directing, producing, editing, and storytelling across multiple formats. Her latest co-directed documentary, “Spotlight,” delves into the challenges and aspirations of young teens navigating the competitive, multi-billion-dollar K-pop industry.
Almar is currently based in New York City and is seeking opportunities as a multimedia producer, filmmaker, or communications professional.
